The inn known as The Ship was built during the reign of Henry VII in 1495. The origin of the sign of The Ship dates back to the 1190’s when it was first used to
identify the premises of a shipwright.
The association of Romney Marsh with smuggling is almost proverbial and has been made famous by the stories and film of Dr. Syn (The Scarecrow). Beneath The Ship, run several tunnels
that must certainly have been used to conceal contraband.
For many years, sheep auctions took place regularly here and for much of the 19th century it was a Customs & Excise posting house. The Ship has seen and undergone many changes since it was built,
but still retains its original charm and character that it has done for centuries. See More History for further information.
